Te Kano Central Otago Tasting with Winemaker Dave Sutton

  • Point Wines 141 Queen Street Auckland, Auckland, 0627 New Zealand (map)

Next Wednesday, we are welcoming for the very first time, Dave Sutton, winemaker at Te Kano Estate, Central Otago.

After meeting him and trying his wines down in Queenstown a couple of years ago, we knew we had to get him to Auckland for a tasting at Point Wines. The time is finally here! Needless to say we are very excited!

If you've had the privilege of visiting their cellar door down in Bannockburn, well, you are fully aware of the pedigree! We are talking about world-class wines in an absolute drop-dead gorgeous location!

We may not be able to fly you all down there, but we can bring the wines to you.

The new kid on the block (their first vintage was 2017), Te Kano has already made its mark and is on the verge of writing a piece of Central Otago's History.

Passionate about Central Otago’s wines and environment, American-born and London-based proprietor Lloyd Family fell in love with the region and its other-wordly beauty, and vowed to help in any way to preserve that wonderland. Their vision has fuelled a unique vineyard and environmental restoration project in Northburn.
Committed to rejuvenating the land and a sustainable future through re-planting and excellent stewardship, intensive native regeneration project has begun with thousands of eco-sourced native trees and shrubs already planted.
This is a one-hundred-year project they are undertaking, a beautiful promise of a better tomorrow, and a loving gift for the generations to come.

Te Kano (Maori for seed), is for those who appreciate the rarest combination of layered elegance and sublime natural quality. From love, passion, dedication, wealth of knowledge and utmost respect for the land, Te Kano was born.

Lloyd’s venture is quite possibly the last of the big grape developments in the Cromwell basin, where booming cherry plantings and housing are competing for a limited supply of suitable land.

Dave Sutton is the Winemaker at Te Kano and has overseen its growth from an initial 5 hectares of Bannockburn vines to an impressive 50 hectare holding across 3 distinctive Otago subregions.

A travelling wine career across areas as diverse as Crimea and Chile instilled an openness to experiment with different winemaking techniques, while cementing the belief that it is the site that determines the true character of the wines he makes. 11 vintages working in Central Otago have enhanced his soft approach to winemaking, and his wines are known for their elegance, finesse and purity of fruit. Dave is all about highlighting the natural beauty of the fruit.

Those wines are all hand-selected from vineyards and barrels, and often produced in extremely limited quantities.

On top of producing top-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Te Kano also offers a unique and eclectic selection of wines with some beautiful surprises in-store for you.
